Your Real Purpose
The meaning of life is to find your gift; the purpose of life is to give I away. ~Pablo Picasso
“Let me braid it up for you. It will be easier to keep up and last longer. But you tell me what you want, and I’ll do it.” I overheard her saying.
She stood there with a sharp short but. The only thing more captivating than her precise haircut was the loud pink color she so masterfully rocked. She was a sight to be seen, and she was unmistakably a hairstylist.
She smiled with pride as her client agreed to a braided style as she said, “Ok, let me give you a good scalp massage and then we will rinse out his conditioner.”
She proceeded, and the client closed her eyes and smiled broadly to reveal her missing front teeth.
“Girl, you gone be so fly when I’m done.”
The woman, a celebrity hairstylist, the client, a homeless woman. They were in the Total Praise Salon at New Life Church where weekly, professional barbers and hairstylist come to serve a population that cannot afford their services.
While seeing these professionals serve is impressive, even more, impressive is that they do this on a Saturday. In the cosmetology world, Saturday is the day where most of the week’s revenue is generated.
So, why would they do this? Why would they give up the one day a week when they could make the most money?
Because they get it: your purpose is not about you, it is about the people in the world that need for you to share your gift. It is about using that gift to restore people and communities to greatness.
Today’s principle Nia is often called Purpose, but it is not just about knowing and finding our individual purpose, it is about how we use that purposes to restore our families, our people, and our communities. How will you use your gift to make your community great, the answer to that question is the answer to your true purpose in life?
